You really cannot appreciate the arrival of a piece of furniture properly unless you have been sitting on bare ceramic tiles for a week in a flat empty of everything except a blow-up mattress and a couple of suitcases.
Today our first furniture acquistion arrived! An outdoor bar table and two bar stools (well, chairs actually). Its made of that UV-resistant synthetic wicker stuff. It looks kind of Mexican in inspiration I guess. It now lives proudly on our balcony where we plan to eat breakfast and dinner every day.
Our balcony overlooks a really lovely tropical walkway landscaped with river stones and snakey-shaped pieces of lawn. Its planted up with relatively mature Frangipani trees (although they are a different type than those common in Australia) and some other trees of unknown variety, and they are uplit at night which is pretty. (When I say relatively mature, I mean the trees are on average about 15 feet tall and perhaps 6-8 years old, which in Dubai terms is tall and virtually ancient.)
The bar table and chairs – being high – enable us to sit on the balcony and use the balcony railing as an arm rest, while we look into the trees below. It really makes you feel like you are outside in the garden while you listen to the frogs singing and smell the scent of frangipani and Arabian Jasmine wafting upwards.
